The Department:

Interventional Radiology offers minimally-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic options to patients through a variety of modalities including ultrasound, fluoroscopy and CT across a broad spectrum of specialties ranging from vascular intervention, urology, and oncology in both an outpatient, elective setting as well as in the management of acute, life-threatening emergencies. The minimally-invasive nature of these procedures means that patients can often avoid open surgery and many patients will have procedures performed under local anaesthetic and have a shorter post-procedural recovery time when compared to surgery. Our department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has recently been recognised as a BSIRQI (British Society of Interventional Radiology Quality Initiative) Exemplar site in recognition of high quality service in the quality of care, patient focus, and range of services we offer.

Our new interventional radiology unit will expand our capacity from one to four interventional radiology suites and includes new anaesthetic rooms, recovery wards, nurse bases, and pre-assessment bays. This expansion will allow for us to meet the growing demand for interventional radiology services at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, as well as offering new opportunities in training Interventional Radiologists and utilising state of the art technology and techniques to ensure our patients receive the best possible care.

In particular, we are pleased to announce that the new Interventional Radiology suites will have state of the art AV capabilities to further enhance our endeavours in teaching and training by continuing to run both workshops and training courses. These capabilities will allow us to live-stream selected cases performed by our consultants to delegates at our endovascular workshops. This will allow us to offer interactive training sessions in real time by expert clinicians on real patients, thus allowing trainees to receive expert tuition on real cases in a safe environment.
